Luke Williams remains optimistic about 'incredible' Notts County group ahead of Gateshead

Notts County manager Luke Williams is choosing to remain positive despite not hiding his disappointment in the manner of the result in the Magpies’ 2-2 draw away at Boreham Wood at the weekend, with the team back on the road again against Gateshead on Tuesday.

County led twice in their game on Saturday, first through Ruben Rodrigues from the penalty spot and then thanks to a brilliant goal from substitute Kairo Mitchell. However, Williams’ side were pegged back on both occasions, with Tyrone Marsh’s spot-kick in the final ten minutes ensuring the points were shared.

Despite the disappointment of letting the win slip away from a comfortable position in the game, no team in the National League has maintained a 100% record from their opening two fixtures, so the result still saw County at the top of the table after the weekend’s fixtures.

The Magpies now travel up north to newly-promoted Gateshead, who have drawn their opening two matches against Dagenham & Redbridge and Barnet, both ending with 2-2 scorelines. County signed forwards Macauley Langstaff and Cedwyn Scott from the Heed this summer which could add a little extra spice to the upcoming fixture as they look to get back in the win column and continue their unbeaten start to the campaign.

Langstaff has impressed in his first two competitive appearances for the club, with two goals on his debut in County’s 3-0 opening day victory against Maidenhead United. He did not have the same level of success on Saturday, but coming up against his former club next should provide enough motivation for him to get back on the scoresheet.

It would be easy for Williams and his side to get caught up in how the Boreham Wood game ended. Still, the County manager remains optimistic about moving forward with what he described as an “incredible” group of players.

“We’re not down at all [about the Boreham Wood result],” said Williams. “The guys are so incredible to work with. However, to be in front of the game and look comfortable on two separate occasions that’s what gives you the feeling that you lost the game twice.

“When you score first and score with the momentum in the game and not against the run of play, at that point, you should go on to win the game because your opponents aren’t giving you a problem, and you’re arriving in the box quite a lot. You should be able to manage the game from that point, and that is why I feel we threw away two points, but again, we’re not down about it.”
