Luke Williams identifies lack of concentration and referee confusion following Notts County draw

Notts County boss Luke Williams explained his disappointment at his side's 2-2 draw with Boreham Wood.

The Magpies twice led with goals from Ruben Rodrigues and Kairo Mitchell, but were pegged back by the home side, with Danny Elliott and Tyrone Marsh levelling from the spot seven minutes from time.

On a scorching day down in Hertfordshire, regular drinks breaks were in order to combat the 33 degree heat, and that seemed to stutter Notts' momentum going into the latter stages of the second half.

And whilst Williams was quick to point out the breaks did not help his side, he insisted that his players must do better in terms of keeping their concentration, which ultimately cost them at Meadow Park.

"The breaks in the game didn't help us, but we have to be better than that," said Williams.

"To switch off because there is a break in the game, or it's warm. That is totally unacceptable. A player goes down with an injury and all of a sudden you can't play football.

"I don't think that's the case. Yes, some of the players lost concentration and had a good spell just before they scored, and I think a few players got nervous."

A tale of two penalties decided the contest at Meadow Park, with Boreham Wood defender Will Evans adjudged somewhat harshly to have handled the ball in the area, with Jamal Fyfield going down softly under a challenge from Mitchell.

And the Magpies boss was quick to ask the question about the Boreham Wood penalty, explaining it was a confusing decision from referee Steven Copland.

"I was very confused as to why that was given," said Williams.

"We were given the lecture from the referee department, all of the managers in the National League and it did not seem like that was the information they were giving to us about their penalty.

"Maybe both penalties are soft, I don't know, but they both seemed nothing to me."

The Magpies continue their campaign with another lengthy away trip to Gateshead on Tuesday night, with coverage available here on NottsLive.
