Luke Williams explains why Notts County made transfer swoop

The word versatility has been used a lot in recent weeks to describe Notts County, with Luke Williams keen to emphasise the importance of that particular trait following the signing of newest recruit Connor Lemonheigh-Evans.

The Magpies further bolstered their attacking options with the addition of the Stockport County man, with the club agreeing to a deal that we see him stay at Meadow Lane on loan until the end of the season.

While the 26-year-old offers an abundance of attacking talent to the already in-form Notts front line, Lemonheigh-Evans also has the capabilities to operate in several different positions, something we have been accustomed to see from Williams' team selection in recent weeks.

With Tobi Adebayo-Rowling side-lined by injury and Aaron Nemane rested following concerns of fatigue, Jodi Jones was deployed as the right-wing back during their 4-0 win over Southend in midweek, combining attacking flair and defensive solidity against a difficult opponent in Jack Bridge - made even more impressive that is was done in an unnatural position since his loan move from Oxford United.

It was yet another iteration of this ever-evolving group of players, with Sam Austin moved out to that same position during the latter stages of that game, while Ruben Rodrigues played as a false nine following the substitution of Macaulay Langstaff late on.

The Notts boss has highlighted personality as a pivotal characteristic when bringing players into the club during his tenure but was also keen to highlight the importance of versatility when looking to strengthen his squad - evident in his two latest signings.

"It's really important, and Connor is now upstairs in the unit meeting with the players and he's there to try to learn all of the different roles in the team so that if we feel like the game requires him to play more left or more right, one higher or one deeper in the middle of the pitch or as a striker as well because he has that as well - we can hopefully give him that crucial information of what that looks like.

"I was fortunate to work with Connor before and I know he is capable of playing many positions because he applies himself correctly, he's bright.

"I saw his debut when he played against Premier League Watford at the time, and he was more than capable and comfortable, he more than held his own and didn't show any nerves.

"So it's really important for me to have a group of players that are happy to play in different positions and apply themselves correctly - we just need to as a group of staff make sure that they take on the right information."

Lemonheigh-Evans' signing has further signified Notts' intentions of remaining at the top of the National League come April 29th, with Williams' side still holding a five-point lead over Wrexham.

However, since moving to Stockport from Torquay in the summer the 26-year-old has been limited to substitute appearances under Dave Challinor, with his last taste of action coming on New Year's Day in their 1-0 defeat away to Grimsby.

The Welshman is arguably most well-known within the Notts fanbase for his hat-trick against Ian Burchnall's side last season at Plainmoor, but many will be relieved his now scoring for them rather than against them ahead of the final 12 games of the season - starting with this weekend's clash with Daryl McMahon's side.

"We will see because we have one more day to prepare," said Williams on Lemonheigh-Evans' potential involvement in this weekend's fixture against Dagenham and Redbridge.

"We have to be careful and be mindful that he didn't play too many minutes and the same that we have done with John Bostock and Jodi Jones - we have to be so careful because otherwise, you are creating a dangerous situation when you could lose a player for a period of time.

"But at the same time, we need to try and get him on the pitch when we can, but we will look tomorrow and see where we think he is and look at his data from training."
