Luke Voit hits two home runs as Yankees beat Orioles in 10 innings

BALTIMORE _ Aaron Boone slotted Luke Voit into the starting lineup Friday night, hoping Voit could give the Yankees some production while the struggling Greg Bird got some rest.

Voit delivered.

He slugged two home runs, including a two-run shot in the top of the 10th inning that helped send the Yankees to a 7-5 win over the Orioles in front of a crowd of 27,150 at Camden Yards.

His homer was the Yankees' second of the inning against Baltimore reliever Cody Carroll after Neil Walker hit a solo shot with one out. That brought the crowd, largely made up of Yankees fans, to its feet.

Zach Britton, making his return to Camden Yards for the first time since being traded to the Yankees, surrendered a solo home run to Chris Davis in the bottom of the 10th, but ultimately sealed the win and earned the save.

The Yankees haven't fared all that well against the Orioles this season despite Baltimore entering Friday owning the worst record in the major leagues, splitting the previous 12 games the teams had played.

CC Sabathia came off the disabled list Friday after being shelved since Aug. 13 because of right knee inflammation.

His outing got off to a rough start.

He allowed a leadoff single to Cedric Mullins in the first before Jonathan Villar bunted for a base hit to put two runners on. After Adam Jones flied out to center, Trey Mancini walked.

That loaded the bases for Davis, who hit a two-run single to right to give the Orioles an early lead.

Sabathia recovered, striking out the next two batters to get out of the inning.

The left-hander ended up going six innings, allowing five hits with two walks and eight strikeouts in an 80-pitch outing.

Sabathia had done his job before handing a tie game to the bullpen.

David Robertson, who hadn't pitched since Aug. 17 because of a sore shoulder, couldn't keep it there. Though the Yankees' defense didn't help him.

John Andreoli started the inning with a grounder to short that Gleyber Torres booted, allowing Andreoli to reach on the error.

Robertson retired the next two batters before surrendering a two-run home run to Villar that put the Orioles ahead, 4-2. But the lead didn't last long.

Through the early innings, the Yankees' offense was mostly dormant. The only damage it could muster up was a two-run home run from Voit in the fourth inning off Orioles starter Alex Cobb, who scattered three hits in six innings.

But the Yankees started showing life in the eighth inning, with Torres redeeming himself for his error.

Mike Wright Jr. walked Giancarlo Stanton to start the inning before Orioles manager Buck Showalter brought in Paul Fry.

That move didn't work.

After retiring Aaron Hicks, Fry allowed consecutive singles to Miguel Andujar and Walker to load the bases.

Showalter again went to his bullpen, this time bringing in Mychal Givens. Again, it didn't work.

Torres singled to right to bring in Stanton and Andujar to tie the game at 4.

After Voit struck out, Austin Romine walked to again load the bases.

But they couldn't take the lead as Ronald Torreyes popped out to first base to end the inning.
