The list of "Battered Bombers" has got considerably shorter now midway through the season. Yet, the Yankees almost can't help but make their rounds on and off the injured list.
On Tuesday before the Yankees-Mets Flushing round of the Subway Series, Luke Voit was placed on the 10-day IL retroactive to June 30. His injury? An abdominal strain he suffered after hitting one of his three doubles during the first game of the London Series against the Red Sox.
On Saturday during the fifth inning, Voit mashed a double to wall, and as he rounded first base he looked as if he was in pain, grimacing and slightly limping his way to second. The problem seemed to be inconsequential when he walked away on his own with no limp, later explaining he "felt weird, felt a discomfort in like my lower abdominal area."
Voit exited that game after going 4 for 4 with two runs, three doubles and an RBI.
"Honestly, I feel fine, I think I could have stayed in, but it was a weird injury. I don't know how to explain it," Voit said Saturday after the game.
On Sunday morning, Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman didn't seem alarmingly concerned with the injury. The first baseman even participated in drills and batting practice before the second game of the series. But when the Yankees starting lineup was release, Voit was not on it.
As the Yankees season has been marred by injuries, there's been no drop off in production or performance from the "B-Bombers" (a nickname he dubbed the team who filled in with the Yankees' marquee roster out on various injuries) who helped get the team to first in the AL East. Though Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge, Didi Gregorius and Aaron Hicks are all back form their IL stints, the "B-Bombers," Luke Voit included, have continued to contribute like nothing has changed.
Voit has been a key part of that team. In 78 games Voit has played so far this season he's logged 82 hits with 14 doubles, one triple, 17 home runs and 50 RBIs.
The Yankees have recalled lefty reliever Nestor Cortes Jr. _ a pitching move they've needed to make since before Cameron Maybin went down with a strained left calf _ and infielder Mike Ford from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre.
