Luke Thompson makes instant impact as England star scores on NRL return

Luke Thompson made an instant impact on his return to the field as he scored Canterbury's first try in four games.

The England prop has missed the opening rounds of the season through suspension but wasted little time getting up to speed as he got the Bulldogs on the board against NRL champions Melbourne Storm with his first try since heading down under.

Canterbury have woefully missed the former St Helens ace, losing their first four games of the season and embarrassingly being nilled in three consecutive games.

Thompson started on the bench and watched in horror as his side fell behind 18-0 inside as many minutes.

He was brought on after Melbourne's third try. Four minutes and six seconds later, he scored Canterbury's first try in 266 minutes.

Thompson was one of Canterbury's best players on the night, finishing the game as the team's second-highest metre maker and making 23 tackles.

However, his performance had little influence on the final result, with Melbourne eventually winning 52-18. The result leaves Trent Barrett's side bottom of the league with no wins in five attempts.

That said, during Thompson's 43-minute first stint, Canterbury stook with Storm, ending that period 18 points apiece.

Thompson, 25, joined the Bulldogs from Saints last summer. He has established himself as one of the world's best front-rowers, representing both England and Great Britain.
