Former Southampton youth coach Jason Dodd believes Luke Shaw is proving his doubters wrong at Euro 2020.
After an injury-ridden few seasons and struggling to impose himself at Manchester United, Luke Shaw has redeemed his reputation and has caught the eye while helping England to the final.
The United left-back's performances have even drawn comparisons to Roberto Carlos as he has racked up three assists during England's journey to the final against Italy on Sunday.
Shaw has faced many critics over the last few years, including his former boss Jose Mourinho, but those have been mute since the England left-back's resurgence.
Speaking to the Daily Echo, Shaw's former manager Dodd has sung the praises of his former protégé.
He said: "It’s brilliant, they [Shaw and Raheem Sterling] haven’t had too long playing together in the England setup.
“And it’s not as if we’ve got one threat either, you’ve got [Kyle] Walker on the right who loves to bomb on. We’ve got threats all over the park, I’m loving it.”
Dodd, who coached Shaw at U16 level, also spoke of his admiration for the 25-year-old's resilience to fight back after a couple of tough seasons under Mourinho.
He added: “At the latter stages of United under Mourinho was the first time his dad sort of pointed the finger, because he’d had a steady rise until then.
“The last 18 months he’s stuck two fingers up to everyone and said 'look, I’m a bloody good player and these are the reasons why.'"
Shaw and his England teammates will have a chance to make history for England on Sunday night.
The Three Lions have never won the European Championship but they could finally end the barren run at Wembley against a resolute Italian side. Shaw could play a vital role in the victory having already played a key part in England's success in the knock-out rounds.
