Luke Shaw has admitted he was yet to read Roberto Carlos' praise after England's stylish 4-0 quarter-final triumph over Ukraine.
The Manchester United left-back delivered an outstanding performance against Ukraine in Rome on Saturday night and his display deservedly drew plaudits from fans and pundits alike, but he's also received a noteworthy seal of approval from a Brazilian legend.
Carlos is widely regarded as one of the best left-backs of all time and after England's win he followed Shaw on social media and commented on his photo before later lavishing the praise on the 25-year-old who has been in electric form this season.
"You can see he’s very motivated, his performance against Ukraine was very good. He’s been improving each game. I think he’s got everything to get to the top. He’s the left-back for England — that in itself says a lot," Carlos told PA Sport.
Now, though, Shaw has admitted he was yet to read that praise, as he explained before boarding England's team coach on Tuesday.
"To be fair, I didn’t even see any of that [Carlos' praise], it's the first time I’ve heard of it," Shaw told the Lion's Den.
"Obviously, it’s so nice to hear that from one of the best left-backs ever and after the game when I had seen he had followed me and commented on my photo, I couldn’t believe it to be honest.
"It was a weird feeling, but one that I take massive respect from it and it’s really nice to hear words from someone like that."
Shaw also explained that he's relishing the prospect of England's semi-final clash against Denmark on Wednesday at Wembley.
“The Germany atmosphere was one of the best I’ve ever played in and I think it felt like a full stadium then," he added.
"It's a semi-final at Wembley tomorrow with 60,000 I think it’s going to be even more special, so all the lads are really excited and hopefully we can put on a show for the fans."
