Manchester United insist Luke Shaw misheard Harry Maguire and Stuart Attwell exchange

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw said in an interview with Sky Sports that he had overheard referee Stuart Attwell admitting United should've had a penalty against Chelsea - but that he didn't award it because he didn't want to cause controversy.

The VAR intervened when Callum Hudson-Odoi appeared to handle the ball in the Chelsea box under pressure from Mason Greenwood. A penalty would have changed the game, which was eventually drawn 0-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking to Sky Sports afterwards, United star Shaw said he found the situation confusing.

"At the time I saw a handball," said Shaw. "I didn't know whether it was Mason or Callum. I just carried on. I didn't even know there was a potential check. I don't know why they stopped [the game] if it wasn't going to be a pen.

"The ref even said to H [Maguire] that 'if I say it is a pen then it is going to cause a lot of talk afterwards'. H got told it was a penalty.

"It's confusing with this VAR, because if it's not going to be a pen they might as well not stop the game. But I'm not going to moan about it, because I don't think either team did enough to win."

United have since told the MEN that Shaw misheard what was said during the exchange involving Attwell and Maguire. At the time of publication, Shaw had not addressed his comments.

Shaw did accept that United should have done more to win the game, after creating few chances against Thomas Tuchel's side.

He added: "There weren't too many chances from either side. We need to keep pushing because we obviously wanted to win today, to close the gap, even though we know the gap is big.

"But we take the point, we know they're a very good team and they haven't conceded too many either. They defend well. So we need to move on, we've got another big game against Crystal Palace this week."
