Luke Shaw on Harry Maguire and Ashley Young differences as Man Utd captains

Luke Shaw has opened up on the differences between current Manchester United captain Harry Maguire and previous skipper Ashley Young.

Maguire was awarded the captaincy by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in January after Young left Old Trafford to join Inter Milan.

In the first half of the season, United struggled for consistency and were often found in mid-table, sinking as low as 12th place at one stage.

However, Maguire has led United on an impressive 11-match unbeaten run to put them within reach of Chelsea's fourth place spot.

And Shaw highlighted the positive impact the £80million summer signing has had on improving the "togetherness" of the Red Devils squad.

"He’s (Solskjaer's) signed people who aren’t just good players, but also really good lads as well," Shaw told Manchester United's website.

"They’ve integrated in the squad really well and brought a bit more energy and togetherness in the group.

"That’s particularly true of Harry. He’s really trying to make sure we get more things done together as a group going forward."

The United left-back then singled out one area where Young's captaincy had struggled, adding: "Youngy was brilliant, really tried his hardest, but sometimes it was difficult to get things done as a group.

"Now we’ve made a pact that whenever a team bonding thing happens, we all have to do it or we get fined. It’s great for the team to be together and do things together."

Former Southampton man Shaw admitted that there can sometimes be friction between players but insisted that is not the case at United.

"In some groups, sometimes, there are people who just don’t get on, which is natural when you’ve got big groups, but I honestly believe that in our squad everyone gets on really well," Shaw said.

"We all love each other, we all want to push each other to be the best and, of course, to get United as a club back to where it needs to be."
