Luke Shaw hails Bruno Fernandes impact at Man Utd off the pitch

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has heaped praise upon Bruno Fernandes for his leadership abilities as the Portuguese midfielder continues to impress at the club.

Fernandes joined from Sporting Lisbon in January and has been winning plaudits for his performances in England so far.

He produced his best showing yet on Sunday as he scored and created an assist in the 3-0 victory over Watford, but according to Shaw Fernandes is making just as important a contribution off the pitch.

Speaking to MUTV , Shaw said: "He's had a massive impact. He's only been here for such a short time but it feels like he's been here for a while.

"You can tell he was a leader at Sporting and I think he wants to bring that leadership skill here to help the team as much as he can off the pitch as well as on it. Hopefully he can keep that up, he's not been here long but he's already shining for us and it's great to see."

Fernandes opened the scoring against the Hornets from the penalty spot after he was brought down in the box by Ben Foster, and the 25-year-old appeared delighted after getting off the mark for his new team.

"This is the day every player wants to have," he told BBC Sport. "I feel lucky to score, I feel lucky to win the game. We all gave our best and we all deserved the win. I just need to help the team, it's what I want to do, it's what I need to do. I hope (Anthony) Martial scores more goals too like he did tonight."

United now face a run of hugely important fixtures, as they first take on Club Brugge in the second leg of their Europa League last-32 tie before Premier League games against Everton, Manchester City, Tottenham and Sheffield United, as well as an FA Cup tie against Derby.
