Luke Shaw explains Manchester United players' belief in Cristiano Ronaldo

Manchester United's Luke Shaw has shared what he was thinking as the ball fell to Cristiano Ronaldo in the final minutes of their match against Atalanta, as the Portuguese international's goal secured a late draw for his side.

Ronaldo rescued a point for United in their Champions League tie in Italy on Tuesday night with a fine effort from outside the box in injury time.

The stunning goal was just the latest in a series of last-gasp Champions League goals from United favourite Ronaldo, following his Old Trafford winners against both Atalanta and Villarreal.

Ronaldo finished Bruno Fernandes’ clever backheel before half-time and then restored parity again with a sensational strike as the second half went into injury time.

And United left-back Luke Shaw has revealed he had 'no doubt' Cristiano Ronaldo's last-ditch effort would 'hit the back of the net' as he heaped praise on his teammate following the game.

Shaw told beIN SPORTS: "I think [it was] a difficult game. They are a really, really good side.

"We knew that they will cause us problems, especially from the first game, we know how they play, we know they are a good side.

"They're structured really good, their formation, they know how to play it so we knew it was going to be tough coming here but I think the lads showed great character to keep on going.

"It could have been easy to kind of give up but we didn't. We did it in the first leg, we kept going.

"And when we need a goal, when we need something good to happen, we have Cristiano.

"There's there's no doubt that when that ball dropped to him, it was going in the back of the net."

Ronaldo's late strike kept United top of their Champions League group, with Villarreal level on points with them in Group F after beating Young Boys 2-0. Etienne Capoue and Arnaut Danjuma were on target for the Yellow Submarine.
