Luke Shaw could be sacrificed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in Man Utd's Ben Chilwell pursuit

Luke Shaw could be sacrificed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United turn their focus towards Ben Chilwell.

The Red Devils have leapfrogged Chelsea and Manchester City to become the front runners to sign Leicester full-back Chilwell.

The Foxes want around £60million for Chilwell and according to The Sun, United have moved ahead of their rivals.

But that could spell trouble, and a diminishing of game time for England left back Shaw.

Shaw has been forced to fight for his position in the United back-four this season, with the emergence of Brandon Williams.

The former Southampton star has made 32 appearances though, and started all of the Red Devils' fixtures since the restart.

Solskjaer hasn't directly discussed his hopes of signing Chilwell, but did talk about how United's plans in the transfer market will depend on whether they qualify for the Champions League or not.

"There's quite a lot of planning going on," the Norwegian said. 'When do we start the league that is obviously determined by how far we go in Europe, you can't really decide on the training programme.

"There are so many small decisions, and transfers are out of our hands as well. If the team is going well, what do we need? What don't we need?

"That's the way we're working and you've got to plan for different scenarios – uncertainty of dates, how much holiday, what will next season look like? It's a little bit up in the air.

"I don't think it's like dramatic decisions. I don't think the club would panic or go crazy with plans that we've already talked about for years to come.

"You do have to have a long-term plan but short-term some decisions will be easier to make if you get in the Champions League."
