Luke Molyneux confirms his Sunderland departure in emotional goodbye

Luke Molyneux has confirmed his Sunderland departure in an emotional goodbye post on Instagram.

The young winger, who graduated from the club's esteemed academy, made six appearances for the Black Cats first team, but will depart this summer as the club decided he has no future at the club.

Sunderland are yet to officially confirm their retained list for the the 2019-20 season, but Molyneux is out of contract this summer and had been expected to depart after seven years at the Wearside club.

The Bishop Aukland-born forward spent last season out on loan, initially with Gateshead and then with Hartlepool. He impressed with both and shouldn't struggle to find a new club in the National League.

Revealing the news of his club departure, Molyneux said on Instagram: "After spending the last 7 years at this club, today I can sadly say it has come to a end. Made some amazing memories and met some fantastic friends along the way and have so many people to thank for getting this far!

“Now I’m ready for a new challenge wherever that will be and looking forward to seeing what the future will bring.”

Speaking to Elliott Dickman on players' progression to the first team

Molyneux made 16 appearances for Hartlepool in the second half of last season, impressing Pools fans with match-winning goals against Dover and Halifax.
