Luke Kelly statue in Dublin vandalised again as lines painted on musician's face

A statue of Luke Kelly's head has been vandalised again.

A thug carried out the mindless act on the landmark, on Guild St in Dublin, today.

It is the second time since the statue's unveiling that it has been defaced.

Pictures show that the head, which sits by the canal near his native Sheriff St, has had glasses painted onto it and lines on the side of its cheek.

The thuggery hasn't been going down well with locals, who have once again been left outraged.

Last June the statue was delicately scrubbed for hours to remove paint after a vandal sprayed it in broad daylight.

Workers, including the statue's designer Vera Klute and councillor Christy Burke, helped get him back to good health as they used solvent to take off the paint.

Peter Wojcievch from P Mac's anti-graffiti service helped get most of the paint off and will return to get some spots in the cracks of Luke's eyes in the morning.

Speaking to Dublin Live at the time, former Lord Mayor and good friend of Luke Christy Burke said seeing the state it was in was "like attending a wake".

He said: "A lot of the young lads and girls were here singing when Luke was unveiled - some came up to me yesterday [after the first time it got defaced] and said 'we'll mind Luke Christy' which was touching.

"The women wanted to get clothes and wipe him down, but we advised against that - but everyone wanted to do something."

The Garda press office has been contacted for comment.
