Luke Jerram's jaw-dropping Museum of the Moon goes on display at Bristol Cathedral

Bristol Cathedral has this week welcomed Luke Jerram's widely celebrated Museum of the Moon installation.

The celestial spectacle was meant to visit the cathedral in August 2020, but due to the pandemic, the opening date was delayed by a year.

Visitors to the College Green venue will be able to view the artist's breath-taking Moon sculpture until Monday, August 30 - with evening tickets available for those who want to experience the celestial body in the moonlight.

Measuring a huge seven metres in width, the intricate model is lit from within and has been created using detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface.

Capturing the moon in forensic detail, the large-scale sculpture is fused with a serene surround-sound composition created by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award-winning composer Dan Jones.

As the Museum of the Moon has travelled from place to place, it has gathered more and more stories and mythologies, while showcasing the latest astronomical science.

Luke’s critically-acclaimed art has a powerful space theme and the Museum of the Moon is the latest to join his portfolio of planets, which includes the spellbinding Mars and Gaia Earth Artwork, which was hosted by the Cabot Institute for the Environment in the Wills Memorial Building in 2019.

Previous large-scale artworks have included the spectacular Palm Temple, which was donated to the University of Bristol last year, the appearance of the Moon on the Floating Harbour and of course the giant 90-metre water slide on Park Street in 2014.

The donations and proceeds raised from the cosmic exhibition will go towards the work of the Bristol-based charity St Mungo's, which works towards eradicating homelessness and supporting those affected by it.

In the coming months, Bristol Cathedral is hosting a number of events aimed at all ages.

The programme includes music evenings featuring the likes of Lady Nade, Blue Moon and James Dorman's Lunar Art Ensemble, science talks and a family-friendly arts and crafts evening.
