Luke Daniels is no newcomer, but this is very much a new departure. He is already known as a composer and multi-instrumentalist who first emerged as a melodeon star two decades ago and has gone on to work with Riverdance and the Cara Dillon band, and can be heard on the soundtracks for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Now comes his new role, as a singer-songwriter. He has a fine, relaxed, if limited voice, but succeeds thanks to the strength of his melodies and the instrumental work, with lush backing provided by his own piano, guitar and zither banjo, and a classy band including guitarist Matheu Watson. The influences range from country to an old Salvation Army hymn, while the lilting Know You More has unexpected echoes of Paul Simon. Don’t be put off by the dour album sleeve; this is a thoughtful, original set.
