Luke Ayling reveals what Leeds United must do differently this season to avoid promotion heartache

Luke Ayling has revealed what Leeds United must do differently this season if they’re to avoid another season of promotion heartbreak this term.

The Whites kicked off their Championship campaign with a 3-1 win over Bristol City on Sunday to get off to a fast start.

Having narrowly missed out on promotion last term, Marcelo Bielsa’s side are the bookmakers’ favourites to claim a top-two spot this time around.

United finished last season in third, despite topping the table for the majority of the campaign, before losing to Derby County in the play-offs.

With that in mind, Ayling has lifted the lid on what he feels Leeds must do differently this time around to ensure they end a 16-year wait for Premier League football.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5Live, he said: “Not to get too high way when it’s really good and not to get too low when it’s too low.

“People get excited when you’re sitting top, especially in Leeds if you go out for dinner, you’re swamped every minute and people are telling you ‘it’s our year, it’s our year’ and after a while, you start thinking yeah, maybe it is our year.

“I think if we are there or thereabouts this year, then I think it’s about playing it game by game and taking it like that.

“It was all new for everybody in that dressing room, for all of us, I think only Forshaw has been promoted into the Premier League from the Championship.

“For all of us that’s a new experience and that can’t be a bad thing, it’s not a bad thing that we fell at the last hurdle, we’re still in the hunt and we still played really good football, and that last push is what we’re all really trying to make happen.”

Ayling missed the season opener at Ashton Gate having not featured throughout pre-season due to injury.
