Lukasz Fabianski urges West Ham fans to get behind Roberto

Lukasz Fabianski has called on West Ham supporters to get behind under-fire goalkeeper Roberto during their crunch derby against Tottenham.

Roberto has come in for criticism for his displays in recent matches but Manuel Pellegrini is set to stick with the experienced Spaniard on Saturday.

Fabianski is expected to be out until after Christmas with his hip injury and he has urged fans to support Roberto through his sticky spell.

“In Roberto’s case, I think he is really trying his best to help the team,” Fabianski said. “Our position is a difficult one because you are always under the spotlight. I am sure he will be an important part of the team in the coming games.

“From the moment the referee blows the whistle until the last moment, as a fan, as a teammate, we should be right there for the team to support them for the 90 minutes and help in some way by creating an atmosphere that can raise your game. That is what I hope to see from the supporters in the coming games. They have an important part to play.”

Fabianski is making good progress in his recovery from the hip injury he suffered against Bournemouth in September. But the 34-year-old Pole says he will not rush his return.

He said: “I would just like to continue to support the team in any way possible and be there for them through the difficult times, making sure whatever I can do for them.”
