Lukaku, Herrera, Darmian: How Manchester United's five summer departures have fared at their new clubs so far

A summer overhaul was expected at Manchester United earlier this year.

However, just five players departed the club permanently.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer asserted that deadwood would be shifted, but players like Marcos Rojo remain at the club after United failed to find a buyer, while Alexis Sanchez and Chris Smalling could only be moved on temporarily.

The United boss signed three new players for his squad - Harry Maguire, Daniel James , Aaron Wan-Bissaka - but their recruits haven't helped turn United's fortunes around; defeat against Newcastle meant it was the worst start to a league season since 1989.

United are expected to strengthen again in January.

With the second international break of the season upon us, MEN Sport take a look at how the players United let leave have fared at their new employers so far.

Romelu Lukaku - Inter Milan

Despite being United's top scorer last season, Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku found himself out of Solskjaer's plans for the new campaign.

The former Everton man was pushed down the pecking order with Martial preferred through the middle and was left with no choice but to depart.

He joined Antonio Conte's Inter Milan on deadline day hoping to revive his career in the Serie A.

Lukaku made an instant impact, scoring on his debut at the San Siro against Leece as well as netting the winning goal against Cagliari in his second appearance.

Three goals in his first seven appearances is a decent start and Inter will be pleased with their business.

VERDICT: Hit

Matteo Darmian - Parma

Facing a similar situation to Lukaku, Matteo Darmian had no choice but to leave United after slipping down the pecking order.

Darmian moved back to Italy and started three games upon his return to his homeland.

An injury sidelined the 29-year-old heading into the October international break.

VERDICT: N/A

Antonio Valencia - LDU Quito

After making over 300 appearances for United, it was time for Antonio Valencia to move on.

The 34-year-old returned to his home country of Ecuador to sign for LDU Quito on a free transfer.

Valencia has been a regular for the side and was given a hero's welcome.

VERDICT: Hit

Ander Herrera - Paris Saint-Germain

Upon the expiry of his contract, Ander Herrera also announced he would be leaving the club on a free transfer destined for French champions Paris-Saint Germain.

Herrera's absence has been felt with Solskjaer failing to sign a centre midfield replacement in the summer despite targeting Sean Longstaff and Declan Rice.

The Spanish midfielder was forced to settle for substitute appearances after joining his new club due to fitness problems but has started the last two league games.

He picked up an assist against Angers during the 4-0 win.

VERDICT: N/A

James Wilson - Aberdeen

The final free transfer of the summer was the departure of James Wilson permanently after various loan spells away from the club.

Wilson was once considered a top prospect at the club but failed to impress during his temporary stays.

He joined Aberdeen on a free but his fortunes haven't improved.

Wilson is yet to start a game and hasn't scored either.

VERDICT: Miss
