Luka Modric drops 'helpful' Gareth Bale transfer hint following Tottenham loan

Former Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric has suggested that Gareth Bale could have a future at Real Madrid.

The Welshman spent last season on loan in north London and ended up enjoying a productive period, having scored 16 goals in all competitions.

His future has continued to be drawn into question since, with some appeals from Spurs fans that he should be brought back to the club on a permanent basis.

However, new Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has suggested that Bale could potentially remain at the Santiago Bernabeu by stating that he would be “coming back”.

Teammate of the winger in both north London and Madrid, Modric has now given his say on the Welshman’s destination by suggesting that he still has a role to play with the Spanish giants.

Speaking to talkSPORT, the Croatian, who is preparing to take on England at Euro 2020, said: “I don’t know what will happen in the new season.

“He’s a great guy and we spent a lot of years together in Spurs and Madrid. It was a great time with him.

“Hopefully we meet in this tournament at a later stage. That would mean we both make it through our groups and further. We will see what will happen in the new season.

“Gareth was playing well with Carlo [Ancelotti] in his first spell and if Gareth is motivated and hungry for football, he can be helpful for Real Madrid.”

Bale still has a year left to run on his contract with Real Madrid having joined the Spanish giants in a record-breaking transfer from Spurs in 2013.

He has previously admitted that he would have to hold talks with the newly-appointed Ancelotti after Euro 2020 to decide where his future lies.

The 31-year-old said: "I know Carlo's returned and I get on with him really well, and I'm not denying that, but I'm just concentrating on now.

"I'm sure I'll have a conversation with him at some point and I'll go from there when that happens.

"As soon as the Euros finishes then I'll go from there."
