Luka Jovic to Tottenham: £55m transfer, Premier League ambition, what Mourinho has said

In just under two weeks, the 2020 January transfer window for Tottenham Hotspur and all the other 19 Premier League clubs will be closed.

Deals can still be made right up until January 31, and unlike the summer window, deadline day is the same across Europe.

For Spurs, they've already signed Gedson Fernandes on a 18-month loan deal from Benfica which is in addition to deals for Jack Clarke, Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso and Ryan Sessegnon before the start of the season.

But are the Lilywhites done in terms of winter business?

Reports would suggest no as a forward to cover for the injured Harry Kane seems to be on Jose Mourinho's radar ahead of deadline day.

With that said, here's what we know about a Luka Jovic to Tottenham transfer.

€65m transfer

Jovic hasn't been at Real Madrid for too long. In fact he completed a €65m (£55m) transfer to the Santiago Bernabeu as recently as last summer after impressing during an initial loan spell with Eintracht Frankfurt.

"Real Madrid and Eintracht Frankfurt have agreed the transfer of Luka Jovic, subject to a medical," the Spanish club confirmed. "The player will be tied to the club for the next six seasons, until 30 June 2025.”

That means Zinedine Zidane is spoilt for options in attack as he can also call upon the likes of Eden Hazard, Gareth Bale, Rodrygo and Lucas Vazquez.

However, Jovic's direct rival for a starting berth is Karim Benzema and the Frenchman has been in superb form for Los Blancos this season.

As a result, the Serbian has made his four La Liga starts thus far.

January move

Jose Mourinho is lining up a move for Luka Jovic this month, according to reports.

The Spurs head coach is believed to be keen to bring in a replacement for Harry Kane who is set to be sidelined until April at the earliest with a hamstring injury sustained against Southampton on New Year’s Day.

And according to The Mirror, Mourinho has identified Jovic as a possible target, with the forward failing to secure regular game time at the Santiago Bernabéu since his arrival in the summer.

Jovic's Premier League admission

Before joining Real Madrid, Jovic admitted he would like to play in the Premier League one day.

"From my experience in the Europa League, I would say that some other leagues in Europe are more suited to me and my way of playing football, he told German publication Die Welt last season.

"In terms of the physique, the Bundesliga is very demanding, but after the games against Chelsea or Inter Milan, I personally had the feeling that I could feel even better [playing] in the Premier League or Serie A.

"I'm looking forward to seeing my level compared to the best players in the world.

"One thing is clear: I want to succeed in my career."

What Mourinho has said

After watching his side draw a blank for the third successive Premier League game against Watford at the weekend, Mourinho was asked if he needs to bring in a new striker before deadline day.

"If it's possible yes, if it's not possible no," he told reporters. "We all know, we all want the best for the team, the best for the club. That is obvious.

"But we have to do things when it is possible to do, it is the right thing to do.

"This is not the last match of Tottenham's history. Next Wednesday we have another one, next season we have many more.

"We have to be calm, be loyal to these boys, respecting everything they are trying to do. If it happens it happens, if it doesn't happen it doesn't happen.

"But good feelings, not a good result but good feelings with the boys."
