Luis Suarez situation takes new twist as Barcelona face £12m bill for ex-Liverpool striker

Barcelona will have to shell out £12million if they want to move on former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez this summer, according to a report.

The Uruguayan international, who netted 82 goals in 132 games for the Reds, quit Anfield for the Catalan giants in 2014, in a £65million deal.

However, Suarez now faces an uncertain future at the Camp Nou with a major overhaul in the squad expected under new coach Ronald Koeman after a first trophyless season in 12 years.

Barca’s iconic talisman Lionel Messi, who like Suarez is now 33, has informed his employers of his desire to quit the club he has been with since he was a junior player in 2001.

However, in Suarez’s case, it is believed that he is one of the players in the squad who the former Everton boss has informed by phone is not in his plans going forward.

Along with team-mates, Suarez arrived at Barcelona's Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper complex in Sant Joan Despi on Sunday August 30 to undergo a medical test for COVID-19 but his wantaway Argentinian colleague was not seen.

Goal reports that it will be far from straightforward to get Suarez off the books at Barcelona though.

His wages are believed to be in the region of £400,000 a week and terminating his contract early would not come cheap and could cost Barcelona £12million.

Suarez has a year remaining on his deal but is open to an early exit after being deemed surplus to requirements.

Five clubs are said to have registered an interest and he has been linked with potential moves to Juventus, Italian champions for the past nine seasons; David Beckham’s Major League Soccer new boys Inter Miami plus former club Ajax.

Given Suarez’s lucrative deal and financial constraints brought by the global coronavirus pandemic though, interested parties may well bid their time in the hope that Barca cut their losses first before making their move.
