Luis Suárez returned to Liverpool’s training ground on Tuesday to reunite with former team-mates and watch Jürgen Klopp put his players through their paces.

The Barcelona striker spent the morning at Melwood, accompanied by his son Benji and daughter Delfina, and an Anfield source told the Liverpool Echo: “Luis is on holiday from Barcelona, and so has come to spend time with his old friends. We have relaxed the visitor regulations for him. He’s just chilling out in the canteen with his little girl and boy and will watch training.”

Suárez said: “It was fantastic to see the lads. The people that work here are really nice and I miss them, so I wanted to come and see some friends. I have really good friends here.

“I had a really good moment here in three and a half years and when you have a really good moment in your life, it is something you remember.

“I always try to watch the games and look out for the results. I am very interested in how Liverpool are doing because they are so important in my life.”

Meanwhile the defender Mamadou Sakho tweeted a video of himself greeting Suárez, saying: “Special visit at Melwood this morning!!”

Suárez signed for Barcelona in July 2014 for £75m, having scored 82 goals in 133 games for Liverpool. He has since said he would not play for any other club in the Premier League.
