Luis Suarez responds to Atletico Madrid's Champions League draw against Man Utd

Manchester United will face Atletico Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League, and that means a reunion with former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez.

The Uruguayan played several games against the Red Devils during his three and a half years in the Premier League, memorably scoring in a 3-0 victory for Liverpool at Old Trafford in March 2014.

Suarez helped Atletico win the Spanish title last season after joining from Barcelona, and scored in a Champions League group stage win against AC Milan this term.

His team were drawn against United after the initial draw - which pitted the Spaniards against Bayern Munich and United against Paris Saint-Germain - was voided following what Uefa described as a "material error"

"I was in a ceremony and they told me. And the feeling was Bayern again?" Suarez is quoted as saying by AS.

The Uruguayan was part of the Barcelona side beaten 8-2 by Bayern Munich in the 2019-20 Champions League, scoring one of his team's two goals, while he also started both legs when Barca beat the German champions in the 2014-15 semi-finals.

His former club also faced Bayern in this season's competition, going out in the group stage after being beaten home and away by the Bavarian side, but Suarez is not getting ahead of himself despite avoiding them in the redraw.

Speaking about the eventual pairing with United, Suarez said "To win the Champions League, you have to beat the best."

"Man United are one of the best. We will go into the knockout stage in the best way possible," he continued.

Atletico were eliminated from last season's competition in the last 16 after losing to Chelsea over two legs, with the Blues going on to lift the trophy.

The Spanish side are still yet to win the Champions League, though they reached the final in both 2014 and 2016.

United topped their Champions League group ahead of Villarreal, Atalanta and Young Boys, but no group winner finished with fewer points than the 11 picked up by Ralf Rangnick's team.

The last-16 clash pits the joint-worst group winner against the worst runner-up, with Atletico earning just seven points from a group containing Liverpool, AC Milan and Porto, and both teams are far from secure in their efforts to secure a top-four berth in their domestic leagues this term.

Diego Simeone's team only clinched their progress on the final matchday with a win in Portugal, with Suarez leaving the field early through injury.

However, the 34-year-old made a speedy recovery, being passed fit enough to come off the bench in the very next game against Real Madrid.

The first leg of Atletico Madrid's match against Manchester United will take place on February 23, with the return leg at Old Trafford scheduled for March 15.
