Luis Suarez in agreement with Carles Puyol over Lionel Messi amid Chelsea transfer links

Luis Suarez has backed Carles Puyol's impassioned response to the news that Lionel Messi wants to leave Barcelona.

Barca have confirmed to Associated Press that the Argentinian legend has communicated his desire to depart the Nou Camp this summer.

It was news that prompted a meltdown among many football fans, with plenty urging their club to seal a deal for the 33-year-old.

That includes Chelsea, with Blues supporters demanding the club go all-out for the attacker.

The news comes after a turbulent few seasons at Barcelona, which culminated in a horror show during their heavy defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

That performance, which resulted in an 8-2 defeat to the eventual Champions League champions, appears to have been the last straw for Messi, one of the most decorated players in the club's history.

He has now received backing from both a current and former teammate at the Nou Camp.

Puyol, who made almost 400 league appearances for Barca during his one-club playing career, has been at the heart of boardroom disputes himself.

The former Barca captain was appointed assistant to sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta after his playing career but resigned in January 2015 after Zubizarreta's departure from the club.

He then rejected the offer to return as sporting director in September 2019.

The 42-year-old has now tweeted his support for Messi's decision.

He said: "Respect and admiration, Leo. All my support, friend."

Puyol's tweet was backed by Luis Suarez, who looks set to leave Barca himself this summer.

The former Liverpool striker replied succinctly, with two applause emojis.
