Luis Enrique says 'disloyal' Robert Moreno had to leave Spain post

Luis Enrique was presented for a second time as Spain coach on Wednesday and faced a series of questions over the departure of his predecessor and former assistant, Robert Moreno.

Moreno took over on an interim basis and later in a permanent role as Luis Enrique stepped down due to a personal matter, the illness of his daughter Xana, in June.

The nine-year-old then tragically passed away from bone cancer in late August and Luis Enrique was expected to take some time out of the game.

In the meantime, Moreno qualified Spain for Euro 2020, but was in tears and refused to speak to the media after the 5-0 win over Romania earlier this month.

That night, it emerged that he would be leaving and Luis Enrique returning to his post, with the news confirmed by Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales in a press conference the following day.

"I feel obliged to give more explanations than I would like, because this controversy has been generated by someone who worked with me for many years," Luis Enrique told the media on Wednesday.

"I had a meeting with Robert Moreno on September 12. It's the only contact I have had with him. We met for 20 to 30 minutes at my house.

"It was clear he wanted to coach at the Euros. It wasn't a surprise, I saw it coming, I understand - he's ambitious. But for me it was disloyal."

According to the former Barcelona coach, Moreno had asked to be allowed to continue as coach for Euro 2020, before resuming his role as assistant after that.

"I don't want anyone like that in my staff," Luis Enrique said. "It's a huge defect. I understand his position, but I'd never share it."

Moreno was asked about the reasons behind his exit last week and said: "Ask Luis Enrique." It is unclear whether he will now look to give his own version of events.
