Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique will undergo surgery after being involved in a cycling accident, the club have announced.
PSG took to social media to reveal that the Spaniard, 55, would need an operation on a fractured collarbone having been treated by emergency services after an incident that took place on Friday.
A message on the club’s official X - formerly Twitter - account read on Friday night: “Following a cycling accident on Friday, Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique was treated by the emergency services and will undergo surgery for a fractured collarbone.
“The Club expresses its full support and wishes him a swift recovery. Further updates will be shared in due course.”
It remains to be seen how soon Enrique will be able to return to work, with reigning champions PSG hosting Lens at the Parc des Princes on September 14 in their next Ligue 1 match to take place after the current international break.
The Parisiens have begun the new domestic season with three successive wins following their dramatic comeback and penalty shootout victory over Tottenham in the UEFA Super Cup in Udine, thrashing Toulouse 6-3 after successive 1-0 triumphs against Nantes and Angers.
Enrique has been in charge at PSG since being hired to succeed Christophe Galtier in the summer of 2023, winning a glut of major silverware including back-to-back Ligue 1 titles and French Cups, plus finally ending the club’s long wait for Champions League glory in Munich in May and reaching the final of the inaugural summer Club World Cup, where they lost to Chelsea.
He also won numerous trophies in charge of Barcelona and has coached Spain, Celta Vigo and Roma since ending an illustrious 16-year playing career in which he spent extended time at both Real Madrid and Barca after starting out at Sporting Gijon.
