Luis Enrique hits out at David de Gea "bad habit" as he defends goalkeeper's latest error

Luis Enrique has backed David de Gea after the goalkeeper's latest error and claimed blaming him is "already a bad habit".

The 29-year-old has regularly come under fire with Manchester United following a string of errors that date back 18 months.

He was again criticised after Spain lost 1-0 in Ukraine with the hosts' winner owing to a poorly placed De Gea.

Viktor Tsygankov slotted home in the 76th minute to win a game that La Roja dominated for large periods.

But Enrqiue stopped short of blaming De Gea, who has had to battle Kepa Arrizabalaga for his place as Spain's No 1.

"You can always do more, but blaming De Gea is already a bad habit," he said.

"If David is blamed for a game like this, switch it off and we'll leave."

Ukraine's winner was their only shot on target while Spain had 21 efforts on goal.

They were undone on the break but their boss refused to hit the panic button and was pleased with their efforts in Kiev.

He continued: "If you attack in a continuous way, you know there are transitions. If a team defends and keeps it at 0-0, they grow, and in one action they've caught us. We have to congratulate them.

Is it time De Gea was dropped by Man Utd? Have your say here.

"Nothing happens because in one or two games you don't score goals. We created chances to kill them off. It was a game clearly under our control, with opponents closing the passes and the passing lines.

"We created chances with Adama [Traore] through his overlapping. In the end, we went into panic mode. I've lost lots of these games in my career. The opponent is growing and then in a transition…

"The conclusion is I liked the attitude of the players. I like what I see."
