David de Gea has already been given an indication over his future at Manchester United should manager target Luis Enrique be appointed.
The goalkeeper has endured a rollercoaster 12 months at Old Trafford, having lost his first-team spot to Dean Henderson at the end of last season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed ahead of the new season that Henderson would remain his first-choice keeper for the 2021/22 campaign, only for the Englishman to be struck down by Covid-19 during pre-season.
De Gea has since firmly established himself in Solskjaer starting line-up, with a string of impressive performances, though the same cannot be said for his place in the international side.
A mistake against Ukraine in October 2020 ended Spain's 15-match unbeaten run and cost De Gea his spot under Enrique, with Unai Simon now first choice between the sticks.
However, Enrique has since come out in defence of De Gea, telling El Chiringuito: "Blaming De Gea is an obsession and has become a turn on.
"The responsibility for each goal belongs to the whole team. We need to improve and create more scoring chances."
The MEN understands Enrique is among the names being considered by United after it was decided Solskjaer's time as manager will come to an end.
With De Gea facing competition for his spot both domestically and with the national team, Enrique has already allayed his fears.
