Luis Enrique explains how Aymeric Laporte has transformed Spain's attack at Euro 2020

As well as transforming Spain's defence, Aymeric Laporte has been praised for his attacking contributions at Euro 2020 by his new national team manager.

Laporte completed his switch from France to Spain just before the tournament began to get his first taste of senior international football after regular snubs from Didier Deschamps.

The Manchester City defender has slotted right in for Spain, who left out Sergio Ramos and other experienced defenders like Dani Carvajal. Laporte has partners Pau Torres of Villarreal and former City teammate Eric Garcia so far on Spain's route to the semi-finals, where they face Italy tonight.

Speaking ahead of that big game, Spain boss Luis Enrique has hailed the impact Laporte has had on the entire team, highlighting his role in instigating attacks as well as being a solid defender.

“As soon as Aymeric was able to play for us he began to make a huge contribution," said Enrique.

"He is a top player in both the attacking and defensive phases. We need someone with composure to bring the ball out from the back and pick up the free man in the midfield line.

“He is strong in the air, he is good with both feet, physically strong, quick and has very good covering play.

“He is an excellent defender and we are all delighted that he has decided to play for Spain.”

Laporte scored his first international goal in the win over Slovakia in the groups, while no player at the tournament has attempted or completed more passes.
