Luis Diaz transfer update issued from Portugal amid €80 million Newcastle links

Newcastle United have yet to make contact with Porto regarding the potential signing of Luis Diaz, according to reports in Portugal.

Speculation has intensified in recent days that the Magpies hold an interest in the Colombia winger, with the club expected to splash the cash in the January transfer window following the recent takeover by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.

Unsurprisingly, a number of big-name players have been linked with a move to the north-east as a result.

Diaz is one name that has got pulses quickening on Tyneside, as the winger has been one of the most exciting players to watch in European football this season.

However, according to Record (h/t Sport Witness ) there has been "no contact" between Newcastle and Porto, nor Diaz's representatives.

It's added that the Magpies are "not at the forefront" for the winger and Porto are keen to keep him around until the end of the season at least.

In the report, it's said the recent stories about Newcastle's interest in Diaz have been well received at the Estadio Dragao, as the potential fee quoted in them is €80 million.

Porto will no doubt want big money for Diaz, as he's developing into a gem of a wide player.

Since the Copa America in the summer, the 24-year-old has scored 12 goals in all competitions and has caught the eye in the Champions League this season against AC Milan and Atletico Madrid.

Given Porto are still in contention to qualify from their Champions League group, Diaz will no doubt be keen to continue playing in Europe's premier club competition.

However, with Newcastle's newfound wealth and ambition, players from across Europe will be intrigued by the project at St James' Park.
