Lufthansa launches new route from Bristol Airport as airline group targets business in region

German airline Lufthansa is launching a new route from Bristol to Frankfurt next March.

The flight route, which will operate twice a day, will be 60 per cent business travellers.

The investment in the region reflects the "strong trading links" between Germany and the South West of England, according to Andreas Koster, a senior director at Lufthansa Group.

He said: “Bristol is an interesting trading partner to Germany. The business market [in the region] is strong and we are a very business focused airline.”

Mr Koster says Brexit has not impacted the growth of the airline group, which includes Lufthansa, Austrian, Swiss, Brussels Airlines and Eurowings.

“We have taken the current political situation into consideration but we are used to dealing with it," he told Business Live.

“The Brexit discussion has been going on for over three years and we got hit with the pound rate falling but we are still growing because of the strength of the economy.”

Nigel Scott, business development director of Bristol Airport (WDP)

Nigel Scott, business development director of Bristol Airport, says the investment is “hugely significant” for Bristol.

“Frankfurt is a key destination,” he said. “It is the financial capital of Europe and we have a strong financial sector in Bristol.

“The endorsement of Bristol is critical and this [route] has been one of [the airport's] long-term visions."

Nigel also says that Brexit is not a concern for Bristol Airport.

He added: “The scaremongering about airlines being grounded after Brexit was taken off the table when it was announced [the industry] would receive third country rights [in the case of no deal].

“Businesses will have to travel potentially even more after Brexit because there will be a need to go to Brussels to lobby as we will no longer have a seat at the table. Links like the one to Frankfurt will be critical.”

The new route is launching on March 30 and will cost £105 for a return ticket, which go on sale today.
