Ludwig Francillette's Newcastle career finally under way: Here's how 6ft 3ins Frenchman is doing

Newcastle United summer signing Ludwig Francillette finally got his Toon career under way with two games in the space of a week.

The 20-year-old defender helped United to a 1-0 win in the Premier League Cup last week and topped up his minutes with 51 minutes in the EFL Trophy last night.

The 6ft 3in centre-back was handed an interesting role after Newcastle opted to make two tactical substitutions on 39 minutes when Toon kids Elliot Anderson and Joe White were taken off with the team 2-0 down.

After plying his trade in non-league circles in France with AS Quetigny before heading to the UK for a trial with St Mirren and eventually joining Newcastle last summer, a slight ankle injury has delayed his bow for the Magpies.

But the imposing defender slotted into the back four at the Montgomery Waters Meadow and looked comfortable on the ball.

At one stage he could have capped his second game for the club with a goal after he ventured forward for a corner but fired into the side netting.

The most impressive thing about his performance was the way he went into challenges against a senior Shrewsbury side and showed no fear.

Newcastle's second string now have a break and don't play again until the mini Tyne-Wear derby in Eppleton on October 21.
