LUDHIANA: An NRI foiled a carjacking bid by two miscreants on a motorcycle and also nabbed them. One of the accused sustained severe injuries and died while undergoing treatment in hospital.
The accused have been identified as Harpreet Singh of Jalandhar and Lakhwinder Singh of Majra Khurd village, Ludhiana. Lakhwinder has died while Harpreet has been arrested. The complainant said on condition of anonymity that he had come from Philippines about three months ago. On Monday, at around 3:20am, he was returning from Doraha with his friend in a Thar jeep. He said that when he was about to reach the village, two men on a bike started chasing him.
“At first, the accused threw a piece of cloth on the front windshield of the car to stop me. The wind blew the cloth away. I understood that they wanted to take my jeep and I sped up but they kept up the chase. The accused tried to break the windowpane of the car with a baseball bat but missed. After that, they brandished a weapon, following which I increased the speed. My house is near a T-point in the village and as soon as I reached there I applied the break. However, the miscreants could not see the T-point as it was dark and crashed into a wall. The man driving the bike suffered severe head injuries, however the pillion rider escaped unhurt,” he said.
The complainant said that village residents came out on hearing the commotion and nabbed the second accused. “We called the police and an ambulance too which took the injured man to hospital,” added the complainant.
Assistant commissioner of police- West Talwinder Singh said that Lakhwinder died in hospital of a head injury. Both Lakhwinder and Harpreet have criminal cases against them. Police also recovered a .32 bore pistol with five live cartridges from the accused. Harpreet said that before targeting the NRI, they tried to break open the shutter of a bike store to steal bikes but failed. PAU police registered an FIR under sections 379-B (snatching), 511 (attempt to commit an offence), 506 (Criminal intimidation), 34 (Act done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC and Arms Act.
