England's Lucy Bronze has been awarded the Fifa Women's World Cup Silver Ball, recognising her as the second best player in this summer's competition.

Megan Rapinoe was named the competition's best player after scoring a penalty to help USA defend their title in a 2-0 win over Netherlands in Sunday's final.

Her teammate Rose Lavelle, also on the score sheet against the Dutch, finished in third place.

Bronze was instrumental in England's superb campaign in France that saw them finish in fourth place after a third place play-off defeat to Sweden on Saturday.

Lionesses head coach Phil Neville described her as the best player on the planet following a stunning performance in the quarter-final victory over Norway.

“I think we’ve seen tonight Lucy Bronze is the best player in the world, without a shadow of a doubt – with her athleticism and quality,” Neville said.

“There’s no player like her in the world. I played full-back but never to that level.”
