Lucy Bronze named in Women's Team of the Year by FIFA - but misses out on Best Player award

Lucy Bronze has been named in FIFA' Women's Team of the Year - but has missed out on the Best Player award.

The defender who hails from Alnwick , Northumberland, was nominated alongside USA duo Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe for the top prize.

Bronze - who plays for Lyon and represented England in their run to the semi-final of the Women's World Cup - was the only Lioness to be named in FIFA's team of the year at a glitzy awards ceremony on Monday night.

The 27-year-old was rewarded for her efforts in the summer in France with the Silver Ball - awarded to the competition's second-best player.

And Bronze narrowly missed out on being named the best player on the planet after Rapinoe received the Best Player award.

The 34-year-old picked up the Golden Boot at the World Cup after scoring six times and helping the USA to retain the trophy.

England boss Phil Neville lavished praise on full-back Bronze after her player of the match role in the Lionesses' success over Norway in the World Cup.

Neville said: "Lucy Bronze is the best player in the world, without a shadow of a doubt - with her athleticism and quality.

"There's no player like her in the world."

But Bronze had previously played down her own chances of receiving the award.
