Lucky winner scoops $410m from ticket sold at corner shop in Phoenix suburb

A winning lottery ticket for $410 million was sold at a corner shop in a suburb of Phoenix, Arizona, officials revealed on Wednesday.

The sole winning ticket for Tuesday's Mega Millions, which equates to around £321 million, was purchased at a Circle K in the city of Glendale, Arizona Lottery spokesman John Gilleland said.

The jackpot can be paid out in 30 annual payments or it is worth $316.8 million if collected in a lump-sum, Mr Gilleland said.

Under a 2019 Arizona law, the winner can remain anonymous forever, Mr Gilleland explained.

"We may never be able to release the identity," he said.

The law specifies that winners of Arizona Lottery prizes of $100,000 or more automatically remain anonymous for 90 days but the winners can choose to remain anonymous permanently.

The option for permanent anonymity was introduced last year.

"Every single person that has won that sort of money has opted for that," Mr Gilleland said.

The winning numbers were 1, 5, 9, 10 and 23, with Mega Ball 22.

In the UK, one ticket-holder won a £170 million jackpot last year, scooping the country's biggest ever lottery win in the EuroMillions draw.

The mega-jackpot had rolled over for the previous five draws, after it reached its limit.

Before that, the National Lottery Rich List was topped by Colin and Chris Weir from Scotland who won £161 million in 2011.
