Lucky Scottish punter scoops £60,000 win on the horses with just a £5 bet

A retired Scots binman has cleaned up after scooping a £60,000 win on the horses – with a £5 bet.

Glemm Purves staked a fiver on an eight-fold accumulator and was stunned when his selections all won , landing him £62,226.

The 72-year-old bachelor – who is partially-sighted and uses a magnifying glass to study racing form – now intends to treat himself to a pair of designer glasses.

Nicknamed Noddy by former workmates in Edinburgh, Glemm placed the wager at his local Betfred shop. His horses triumphed in races at Plumpton, Southwell and Naas, in Ireland, on Sunday.

Glemm, who now lives in Wetherby, Yorkshire, said: “My winning system is to go with accumulators with mainly favourites and the odd outsider.

"This has been my biggest win but I picked up £10,000 on an eight-fold accumulator in August and won £1000 on the Irish Lottery.

“I am going to get some new specs – I’m going to get some Cartier ones, which cost £1000.”

Betfred boss Fred Done, who arranged for Glemm to receive whisky and champagne to celebrate, said: “What a tremendous return for a loyal customer.

“He beat odds of nearly 13,000/1 to win so much from just a fiver.”
