Lucky punter wins £230,000 after placing fiver on footy accumulator

A man who placed a 21-team accumulator for £5 scooped a £229,246.71 jackpot.

The lucky punter hit the back of the net when Real Madrid beat Real Sociedad last Saturday night.

The man, in his mid 40's, will be having a 'cracking Christmas' after taking bookmakers William Hill to the cleaners last weekend.

It followed 20 other results he’d correctly predicted – with only four of the winners odds against, reports the Mirror .

The lad from Essex’s biggest-priced picks were Scotland at 7-5 to beat Cyprus and Morton to beat Arbroath at the same odds.

Karen Heapy, shop manager at William Hill’s South Ockendon branch, said: “Usually customers laugh when they see a payout figure on the bottom of their slip with hundreds of thousands on it, but this just goes to show it can happen.”

Rupert Adams, spokesman for the bookies, said: “This chap will be having a cracking Christmas and I am delighted for him as it’s really going some landing a bet like that.”

In November 2017, a 59-year-old woman from Essex won £574,278.41 with a £1 12-team accumulator after choosing team names she thought sounded “nice”.

Rupert added: “It’s not funny being spanked twice in just a few seasons by Essex punters.”
