Lucky punter wins £1,500 on Leicester's record-breaking 9-0 win over Southampton

One lucky Leicester fan is quids in after backing his team to score nine in their record-breaking victory over Southampton .

The Foxes equalled a Premier League record set by Man Utd back in 1995 after inflicting the heavy defeat of the Saints on away soil.

And Paul Adlam, 41, of Bournemouth had extra reason to be happy as he collected £1500 on an in-play bet he placed on his mobile during Friday's match.

The Leicester fan stuck £10 on his side to rack up the record-equalling tally when they were already three goals to the good and Southampton's Ryan Bertrand had been sent off.

A Betfred spokesperson told Leicester Mercury : "He said he likes outrageous bets and had one on France beating Argentina in the last World, Cup and won £1,600.

“As Leicester got close to his predicted score he left the lounge to go and watch TV upstairs and his wife wondered what was going on with all the jumping about.

“Leicester have always been a team that bookies are wary of after their 5,000-1 Premier League winning season.

"There’s a lot of confidence around Leicester, they’re the in-form team.

“We believe no-one else in the country had Leicester to win 9-0 and he’s told us he’s going to have the best ever Christmas for him and his family.”

The huge defeat was not so enjoyable for Southampton, whose players have since donated their weeks wages to the Saints Foundation by way of apology to the fans.

And Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has been keen to put the episode behind him and his team.

In a statement on Twitter he said: "After this, no more talking from us, no more messages - the time for that is over.

"Our only focus is working towards Manchester City . That is where we must direct our entire energy, and this is what we owe to our fans", along with the caption "No more talking. No more messages."
