Lucky Labrador Alfie on his way home after fighting for life in hit-and-run collision

Lucky Labrador Alfie is being allowed home after being seriously injured in a hit and run collision in Newcastle.

At one stage, the black Lab was critically ill after being flung into the air by the car on Monkchester Road, Walker on Saturday afternoon.

Heartbroken dog owner Louise Wood had taken Alfie out with her to the chemists when her pet bolted over the road and was stuck by a light-coloured car.

She claims the car did not stop or even slow down, and Northumbria Police are investigating.

But after a worrying few days, Alfie is slowly starting to recover and can be picked up from the PDSA vets in Gateshead on Monday afternoon.

Mum-of-one Louise from Walker said: "We have seen a massive improvement and he's allowed to come home.

"He's still really poorly and he still does have damage to his lungs."

She added: "I'm so happy he will be home."

His journey back to full health will be a "slow process" but he is sure to be spoiled by his relieved family, including Louise's two-year-old daughter Lilly.

The 24-year-old retail worker said she had been given "a lot of support" from other dog lovers.

Gentle giant Alfie was hit on the side and was thrown up in the air several metres before slamming into the ground on the other side of the road.

The five-year-old dog was left with compression on his lungs and his condition was touch-and-go when he first arrived at the vets.

A Northumbria Police officer who watched CCTV footage of the collision told Louise it was "far and away one of the worst animal collisions I've seen".
