Lucky escape as driver unhurt after car goes up in flames on busy Scots motorway

A car went up in flames on a busy Scots motorway on Friday with police and fire crews called to the scene.

Emergency services raced to the M90 near junction four in Fife at around 3:45pm on Friday, December 17.

Fire crews were called to extinguish the blaze after the vehicle caught fire on the hard shoulder.

One passenger in a passing car captured the shocking scene as smoke billowed from the car.

Motorists took to social media to warn traffic had been brought to a 'standstill'.

One wrote: "We’ve been stuck for over 20 mins already but can’t actually see what’s happened."

Another said: "I passed the car when it was completely engulfed in flames- no police or fire engines were there yet- a man was a few meters away."

No one was injured in the fire.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We were made aware of a car on fire on the hard shoulder of the M90 near junction four around 3.45pm.

"Nobody was injured and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service extinguished the fire.

"Officers managed traffic at the scene and the vehicle was recovered by around 5.20pm."

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have been contacted for comment.
