Lucky escape as car smashes into broken down vehicle in dramatic M62 crash at Huyton

Two drivers had a lucky escape after a car smashed into a broken down vehicle on the M62.

Dramatic pictures, from Merseyside Police 's roads policing unit, shows a crumpled car with severe damage to its rear.

The back of the car is completely unrecognisable with the boot entirely crushed into the back seat of the vehicle.

Another damaged car can be seen with its front crashed into the central reservation, with its bonnet bent and bumper crushed.

Debris from both vehicles can also be seen scattered in the road, following the crash on the M62 westbound at J5 Bowring Park this morning.

The crash, which happened at around 9am, has closed two lanes closed of the motorway but police confirmed people in both cars had a lucky escape with no injuries reported.

The Roads Policing Unit tweeted: "Two vehicle RTC on the M62 J5 Bowring Park to Switch.

"Broken down vehicle in lane 3 struck from behind.

"There will be congestion for a while until we get the vehicles removed. No injuries were sustained thankfully."

North West Motorway Police also confirmed there were two lanes closed on the westbound carriageway "between the slip roads at J5".

The crash followed closures on the M57 with two lanes closed southbound at Junction 6 due to a vehicle fire.
