Lucknow University students decry attack on professor, seek more security

LUCKNOW: Students of Lucknow University on Thursday condemned the assault on associate professor Ravi Kant and demanded that authorities must take strict steps to prevent such incidents from happening in the future, as such indiscipline will tarnish the image of the university.

On Wednesday, an MA student had assaulted assistant professor Ravi Kant in front of the proctor’s office.

Earlier, Ravi Kant was mobbed by some LU students after a video of his comment on the Gyanvapi dispute during a debate went viral.

“Such incidents are a stain on the glorious history of LU. The academic environment of the university is being spoiled by giving political and religious colours to everything,” said MA student Ayushi Singh.

Another MA Student Anamika Yadav said, “An attack on a teacher is an attack on the university. LU is growing academically and has recently got a good place Nature Index ranking for producing excellent research papers. Such incidents will impact the reputation of the university.”

“I strongly condemn the assault on Ravi Kant Sir outside the proctor office. This would have not happened if police had registered FIR when unruly elements had mobbed him on May 11. The university should punish Kartik so that no student in near future crosses the limit,” said BA third year student Vishal Singh affiliated to the National Students’ Union of India.

Echoing the same sentiments, a senior professor said, “If such incidents are not stopped then the image of the university will revert to that in late 90s and early 2000 when students didn’t want to take admission in LU due to indiscipline. It will impact the reputation and as a result, it will not get good students, teachers and its students will not get good jobs.”

Meanwhile, a few students staged a protest at gate no. 1 demanding the removal of Ravi Kant for hurting religious sentiments.

The protesting students alleged that Ravi Kant is spreading casteism on campus and is hurting religious sentiments. In a memorandum given to vice-chancellor Prof Alok Kumar Rai, the students said Ravi Kant has been promoting casteism and hurting religious sentiments through his lectures.
