LUCKNOW: A criminal named in 22 cases of loot, extortion, murder, attempt to murder, who was on the run for the last 20 years was arrested after an encounter with Gomtinagar police in Vipul Khand area during the wee hours of Saturday.
The accused, Siraj (35) of Madiaon area, was named in a murder case in 2008 over a piece of land in Sultanpur.
"Other four accused were arrested but Siraj had managed to dodge the police by impersonating himself and fleeing," a senior police officer in the crime branch said.
DCP east zone Prachi Singh said Siraj carried the cash reward of Rs 20,000 and was on the run for 20 years.
"A police team was involved in checking drive of vehicles when they spotted two men on a bike. When the police team asked them to stop, they opened fire. Cops fired in retaliation in which Siraj sustained bullet injury. His aide managed to escape," said Singh.
Siraj was rushed to the community health centre in Chinhat. Police recovered a country-made pistol and a bag having looted jewellery and tools.
