Lucknow: Covid spreading tentacles, experts warn of fourth wave

LUCKNOW: The steady rise in daily Covid-19 cases being reported in the city for over a week witnessed a sharp increase on Wednesday when 191 people tested positive for the novel coronavirus infection.

Experts warned that if people continue to ignore safety protocols, the spike could turn into a fourth wave of the pandemic within days. Although 65 patients diagnosed with the disease earlier also recovered in the past 24 hours, new additions took the number of active cases to 744.

Alambagh reported the highest 29 new cases followed by Sarojininagar (22), Indiranagar (19) and Chinhat (14), while the rest were from different areas of the city.

The number reported in the city on Wednesday was highest in a single day after February 15 when 279 people tested positive in a 24-hour period. However, the relief was that none of the cases are critical. Most patients have mild or no symptoms.

“Barring four patients who were admitted to hospital for non-Covid ailments and tested positive during routine testing, the rest among the fresh cases have mild symptoms and are recovering at home,” said chief medical officer Dr Manoj Agrawal.

District surveillance officer Dr Milind Vardhan said, “Though there is no need for panic, we urge people to wear masks in public places and get themselves tested as soon as they develop influenza-like illness. People whose second dose of vaccine or booster shot is pending should take it at the earliest.”

“Genome sequencing of those coming from other countries or states is being done to keep track of any new variant or mutation,” he added.
