Lucifer Star Tom Ellis Gains Confidence in Shirtless Scenes

Tom Ellis coming out of a swimming pool shirtless

In the world of acting, shedding inhibitions and baring it all on screen is often a daunting task, even for seasoned performers. However, Tom Ellis, widely recognized for his portrayal of Lucifer Morningstar in the hit TV series Lucifer, has conquered his fears and found newfound confidence in going shirtless on-camera.

In an interview with PEOPLE, Ellis revealed that he used to experience a profound sense of nervousness when it came to disrobing for scenes. But he shared that his mindset towards working out and his own body has shifted, which has helped him grow more comfortable in front of the camera. While he acknowledges that undressing in a room full of people can still be a little uncomfortable, he has learned to swiftly overcome those feelings.

Ellis’ latest project, the Netflix rom-com Players, showcases his altered perspective as he elegantly removes his shirt within the first 30 minutes of the movie. Starring alongside Gina Rodriguez, Tom Ellis plays the suave foreign correspondent Nick Russel, who captivates Mack, Rodriguez's character, with his striking good looks.

Interestingly, Ellis formed a special bond with Rodriguez on the set of Players, as they both ventured into new roles following their long-term TV projects. Ellis had played Lucifer Morningstar for five years, while Rodriguez had starred in Jane the Virgin. They connected over their shared experiences and understood the challenges of breaking away from a beloved character.

Coming out of the five-year run of Lucifer, Ellis admitted to feeling insecure about being typecast. However, the support and understanding he received from Rodriguez helped him navigate this transitional period. They both understood the intricacies of bidding farewell to characters that had become deeply embedded in their identities as actors.

Players explores the complexities of orchestrating a love story as Mack and her friends attempt to transform a casual hookup into a committed relationship. As Ellis embarked on this project, it marked his first film endeavor after the conclusion of the Lucifer series.

Beyond his on-screen prowess, Tom Ellis also opened up about his personal life. He credits timing as a significant factor in his relationship with his now-wife, Meaghan Oppenheimer. Initially, both Ellis and Oppenheimer were a bit hesitant when it came to arranging a date, but fate intervened. They serendipitously found themselves at the same restaurant and fate united them at the dinner table. Ellis affirms that they have been inseparable ever since and have been happily married since 2019.

Ellis and Oppenheimer recently welcomed their first child, a daughter named Dolly, in November 2020. Basking in the joy of fatherhood, Ellis described his daughter as a delightful and captivating presence in his life.

As for his other children from previous relationships, Ellis shared that they were initially unimpressed by his on-screen work. He jokingly stated that they only gave his face on television a cursory glance. However, he believes that witnessing him work alongside talented actors like Gina Rodriguez has managed to impress them.

While Players premiered on Valentine's Day, Ellis humorously expressed that he, like many men, doesn't pay much attention to the holiday. But for him and his wife, everyday activities and quality time together are equally important. They make it a point to celebrate love and connection throughout the year, rather than confining it to a single day.

Looking ahead, Ellis expressed his desire to return to the stage and reconnect with his theatrical roots. With a bachelor's degree in dramatic studies, he hopes to grace the theaters of New York and London once again. The allure of live performances and the unique magic they hold have always captivated him.

Undoubtedly, Tom Ellis continues to explore new avenues as an actor, forging connections, overcoming insecurities, and embracing the challenges of his craft. With Players now available on Netflix, audiences can witness Ellis' charismatic presence and undeniable talent in this lighthearted rom-com. And as he continues to evolve in his career, fans eagerly await to see where his journey takes him next.
