Lucas Torreira has been heavily tipped to leave Arsenal this summer.
At the beginning of the transfer window, there was talk of a return to Italy - two years on from joining the Gunners from Sampdoria after an impressive showing at that summer's World Cup.
However, last week brought about a fresh and perhaps surprising twist.
Sport 890 - a publication in Uruguay - reported that Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone had called the Gunners midfielder to tell him that he is wanted in the Spanish capital before deadline day next month.
In addition, journalist Sebas Giovanelli hinted that Torreira could be tempted by a move to Atletico, despite looking set for a return to Italy amid links to Torino and Fiorentina.
And it would appear that Torino have given up their pursuit of the 24-year-old.
The Serie A outfit's sporting director Davide Vagnati has delivered an update on rumours linking his club with a move for the Uruguay international.
"Torreira is a top player but his price is too high," he said, as per Fabrizio Romano. "It's difficult to sign him from Arsenal, not just for us."
This update comes a week after Vagnati said Torreira was no longer a priority for Torino.
"The coach has had time to evaluate the squad at his disposal, we are content with what Rincon is doing, so a midfielder in that role is no longer necessarily a priority for us," Vagnati told Sky Sport Italia.
"We discussed the new technical and tactical project, he is happy with the players and there is still time to the end of the transfer window, so we'll see what happens then."
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Atletico Madrid remain interested in Torreira.
However, Arsenal have asked for a permanent deal and that seems to be the only condition that would see the midfielder leave this summer.
If Gunners supporters get their wish, a Torreira and Thomas Partey swap deal would be the dream scenario.
