Lucas Torreira set for Arsenal exit as agent travels for transfer talks with Atletico Madrid

It seems Lucas Torreira's potential Arsenal departure may have moved a step closer.

Torreira has emerged as a transfer target for Spanish side Atletico Madrid, having fallen down the pecking order under Mikel Arteta at Arsenal.

Arteta is keen to strengthen his midfield options and the Gunners could offload the Uruguay international to make room for the possible arrival of Houssem Aouar from Lyon.

Arsenal need to sell to raise funds for that Aouar swoop and are looking for a permanent deal for Torreira, rather than a loan.

And Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the situation.

He says the player's agent is in Madrid to discuss a move, and that Atletico are lining up a fresh bid.

"The agent of Lucas Torreira is now in Madrid to meet with Atletico," Romano tweeted. "Negotiations on between Atleti and Arsenal to complete the agreement.

"#AFC are still asking for a permanent deal - Atleti are gonna make a new bid. Talks on."

Meanwhile, Arsenal are still interested in signing Atletico midfielder Thomas Partey, according to The Express.

It had previously been suggested that Torreira could be included in a deal to land Partey.

The 27-year-old apparently has a £45million release clause in his contract.
